To achieve DIMENSION-POLYANT’s goal of continuous product development a commitment at both the design and manufacturing level is required. At the design level we have commissioned a number of studies into the optimisation of fibre layouts. The optimisation parameters for a smaller Grand Prix racing yacht are different to that of a Superyacht cruising yacht where appropriate safety factors in terms of breaking strengths become more critical. Interestingly, a recent optimisation study on a Superyacht main and jib showed that our safety factors were consistent with the requirements for such a yacht and the optimisation process allowed us to maintain that safety factor but reduce weight slightly and improve shape holding ability.



SK90
Dyneema® continues to present a significant advantage in Superacht sail construction with its very significant strength properties and good stretch resistance. DIMENSION-POLYANT elected to manufacture Superyacht membranes using SK78 because of its superior creep resistance over lower grades of Dyneema®. SK90 is another step in the development of the Dyneema® yarn with stretch resistance closer to that of Carbon fibre. A number of membranes utilising SK90 are in the field being tested.

Dyneema® and Carbon
Composite fibre combinations are not newin membrane manufacturing but the combination of Dyneema® and Carbon are. Composite fibre combinations allow for combinations of both strength and stretch resistance. Dyneema® represented a significant laminating challenge which DIMENSION-POLYANT overcame with both process improvements and improvements in the fibre from DSM. Dyneema® and Carbon fibre composites in the membranes are still a work in process that DIMENSIONPOLYANT is now ready to take to field tests.
