Transatlantic Race – Maltese Falcon completed the race in a 2nd place
in the Open Class

Maltese Falcon, the massive 289’ Perini Navi built for Tom Perkins and recently acquired by Elena Ambrosiadou, recently finished the Transatlantic Race sporting an entirely new inventory built from DIMENSION-POLYANT Square® Weave Polyester fabrics. Maltese Falcon participated in the Open Class against a Gunboat 66 Catamaran, which eventually finished 100 miles ahead of the largest boat in the fleet, though there is little doubt that the professional crew of the Perini provided a far more comfortable crossing from Newport, RI to the Lizard on the south coast for England than any others in the 26 boat fleet.

The new sails were built by Doyle Sails to replace the original inventory, which had almost 95,000 miles of use. Very few modifications were made from the original designs, so Doyle was confident in the performance of the DIMENSION-POLYANT Square® Weave styles to meet the exacting tolerances of this unique yacht.

There are 5 sails apiece on each of the three huge, unstayed masts, the 15 combined sails covering a total of over 1150 square meters. With the sails taking over a month to build, DIMENSION-POLYANT worked carefully with Doyle on the specifications of the fabrics and coordinated special production runs of the 340SQ MT and 265SQ MT style fabrics to meet the requisite yardage. 5 more spare sails are still in production and will soon be available to rotate into the current inventory; this allows routine maintenance on the sails without disrupting an active charter schedule.
